Guys With Thighs

Guys With Thighs

People come in all shapes and sizes. And in the case of this particular person, that means disproportionately large thighs. Corey's not going to be involved in this post becuase he doesn't get stuck in pants before they pass the knee in the fitting room. I swear, if I stop working out and gain a few pounds, guess where they go first, my thighs. Or let's say I start working out a ton, first place I see huge muscle growth? My calves and thighs. C'mon, I'm even skipping leg day!!

Best Brands

So I thought I'd share a bit about the issue and what I do to try and get around it. For starters, I tend to know the clothing brands that work well for me. If you're not sure which brands work well for you, just spend a day at the mall and try them all on. Some stores might surprise you and others will confirm what you already expected. Here are some of the best I've discovered:

1. Old Navy - my 7th grade self made this a hard store to learn to love, but their pants fit crazy well. And the price tag doesn't hurt either.

2. Banana Republic - shouldn't come as a huge surprise since they own Old Navy. The nature of the clothes at BR means I get more slacks or suits here. Old Navy's for the casual stuff.

3. Bonobos - These guys really came on the scene as being for guys with larger legs who still wanted pants that fit well. I spent a good year devoted to their Weekday Warriors collection. They are muted colors that work well in an office environment. Pepper those throughout the week with their travel jeans and you're everyone's new office husband.

Bonus: If you're looking for a smaller brand, I've really had success with DSTLD.

Fabric & Fit

This is the primary thing on my mind when I'm trying stuff on. Is the fabric practical or, even better, interesting? And how does it actually fit on my body. I've had lots of hard decisions to make where I'm in love with a new piece of clothing and the fit is just slightly off. And I haven't always chosen well.

Now for fabric, I tend to look for stronger materials that offer some structure. Chances are they will hug my thighs, wrinkle a little around the knees, hug my calves, and then head straight down to my ankles with maybe the tiniest taper. Because of yours truly's beautiful hourglass shaped legs... the fabric that's not hugging my legs needs to be rigid enough to maintain some structure until it's hugging again. Denim is obviously great at doing this, and some thicker cotton weaves can provide this too - think heavy chinos. You'll also want strong fabrics because we don't all have Beyonce's thigh gap - that's all I'll say on the matter.

Notice these Old Navy jeans hugging my hour glass legs. Feel free to ignore the threatening pose...

Caution: Raw denim. I've tried and I've tried. And my leg hair has suffered. There's something about the fabric that tears out my leg hair and it SUUUUCKS. So if you've got some leg hair, and voluptuous legs, I'd recommend steering clear.

Shorts

Be open minded when it comes to shorts. Club Monaco pants fit me horribly, but Club Monaco shorts are awesome! I have no idea what causes this but don't assume just because the pants don't fit that the same holds true for the shorts. Something I aim for with shorts fit is making sure the the leg isn't so tight that it hugs my thigh the whole way down. I like leaving some space around the bottom of the shorts to give the appearance that I, in fact, have such little tiny stick legs I can't even fill the leg of the shorts (I know, it's genius). If you decide that works for you too, just don't forget it when you start cuffing and rolling.

See the space around the leg in action, accentuated by harsh shadows ;)

I'm really interested to hear your thoughts on the matter! It's a constant struggle so let me know if you have any favorite brands, fits, or tricks you'd recommend.
